Beaudy the Musical @ Parade Theatre 08/07/2010

Last night backstagejobs.com.au attended Beaudy the Musical @ Parade Theatre (Commercial production)
The classic 17th century fairytale The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods is irreverently transported to modern day Australia in this exciting new musical theatre production. Beaudy, written by Australian musician Michael Orland, is a funny contemporary musical set in a small Australian town.
Beaudy is a memorable evening of song, dance and good old-fashioned story telling. Australianised and updated, Beaudy is a spruced up old fashioned tale filled with great original music, laughs and familiar icons.
Beaudy features a talented and exciting cast of sixteen including Stephen Fisher-King, Lizzie Taylor, and The Four Kinsmen’s Scott Radburn and is accompanied by a full live orchestra performing twenty wonderful songs.
THE REVIEW
Lighting Designer/Operator, Simon Bray
Before I start the review from my understanding this was a professional production.
Once we arrived in to the theatre the stage was black with a single prop lit by a single spot with some back lighting, and that was the best part of the show “why?” you ask let me continue…
As the show started I noticed in the main rig was a couple of mirror scanners (cheap disco lighting) and two show fogs which were in view of the audience and use of the Parade theatres standard lighting rig.
The lighting was totally shocking as though out the show lights came on and off during scenes and shadows all over the place.
The use of the cheap disco lighting and the over use of the fog make it look like a blue light disco!!
Today I have received 35 emails from subscribes of backstagejobs.com.au asking if NIDA had anything to do with this show ?
“I feel that this show would tarnish the NIDA reputation.” Chris,NSW
“I can not believe NIDA would allow this type of production in there theaters” Belinda, NSW
“A primary school could do better than this” Ben,NSW
This is only a selected few we could show, so we contacted NIDA today to ask them the following question ?
“backstagejobs.com.au attended Beaudy The Musical at the Parade Theatre @ Nida last night.
Today I have received over 35 emails from members and subscribers of our site asking was Nida involved in this production at all as the technical aspects of the show was appalling and members have questioned why Nida would allow this type of production in there theaters.”
The official response we have received from NIDA today is ” Michael Orland has hired the theaters from NIDA on a independent and commercial basis”
